In the words of the closing paragraphs from our own, Sunsets West Coop's Newsletter.
www.sunsetswestcoop.weebly.com for more information on the governance and principles of Co-op's such as Sunsets West.
A Co-op is a member owned retail business that provides high quality grocery and retail items at the lowest prices to their customers. Co-operatives strive to enrich their communites; through consumer education, discount programs, member ownership, and the creation of liveable wage jobs. Cooperatives integrate their communites by selling locally grown and produced goods from small family farms and businesses as much as possible.
The Cooperative Identiy:
* Definition: A co-operative is an autonomous association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common ecomonic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise.
* Values: Co-operatives are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, and solidarity. In the tradition of their founders, co-operative members are best to believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsiblity and caring for and about others.
* So - happy people for a happy venture ... Working together for the greater good of their own combined communites.

February 19th at Veela Cafe
A stunning afternoon, a shame to be indoors, even so eight of us met to begin the challenge of the Port Angeles Food Co-op. The core group is Peter and Jane Vanderhoof, Jane and Terry Hielman, Max Mania, Tara Demers, Hank and Robin Gibson.
After a good round of discussion involving both past and present, we came to the decision that a Co-op will go ahead.
Tara stood up to begin the work force and is now looking for supporters, Max is looking for businesses ready to contract goods and services, and a premise is being sought.
I suggest nextThursday February 24th at 11am at the Veela Cafe in First Street. This event has been cancelled due to weather.
We will meet again soon, on Thursday 3rd March at 11 am at the Veela in First Street. Everyone is welcome.
Thursday went well with five people able to attend, the weather is difficult and lots of sicknessabounds. It was decided that it is a good idea to do a Food Co-op. A venue is being researched, Attitudes and attributes for a Co-op are being shared, the college has offered help with the development of the business program as long as the intern who volunteers to build either a business plan, a web site or a graphic design component can have an ongoing input into the development of his or her project including 500 hours of practical experience. Three people have asked to work at the Co-op and several people have now volunteered to start putting the plan into operation as they develop paperwork to get things rolling. I will take a step back now and allow the leaders from their own community to take up the lead.
Thank you all I am totally thrilled to see the involvement and commitment coming from the initiatives that the Food Policy Council has instigated come to fruition.
Congratulations and keep up the good work. Jane

At this meeting an Interim Board was elected by those present. Plans are rolling along now on several fronts, PDN has taken an interview.
